{"id":19778,"date":"2021-10-06T09:00:49","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T09:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/?p=19778"},"modified":"2025-11-19T17:24:36","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T17:24:36","slug":"consumer-health-minute-participate-in-health-literacy-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/consumer-health-minute-participate-in-health-literacy-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumer Health Minute: Participate in Health Literacy Month!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthliteracymonth.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Literacy Month<\/a> began with Helen Osbourne, health literacy consultant, in 1999 to bring awareness of the need to create and provide health information that is understandable by patients and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Healthy People 2030 updated their <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/national-health-initiatives\/healthy-people\/healthy-people-2030\/health-literacy-healthy-people-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">definition of health literacy<\/a> to include both personal and organizational health literacy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Personal health literacy<\/strong> is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organizational health literacy<\/strong> is the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This new definitions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emphasize people\u2019s ability to use health information rather than just understand it<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the ability to make \u201cwell-informed\u201d decisions rather than \u201cappropriate\u201d ones<\/li>\n<li>Incorporate a public health perspective<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge that organizations have a responsibility to address health literacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17821 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/Health-Literacy_5-Word-Cloud-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"word cloud with the words Health Literacy centered and other words around it such as Patrons, Library, Outreach and more\" width=\"347\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/Health-Literacy_5-Word-Cloud.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/Health-Literacy_5-Word-Cloud-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/06\/Health-Literacy_5-Word-Cloud-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What can you and your organization or library do to address health literacy?<\/p>\n<p>Highlight <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MedlinePlus<\/a>, the National Library of Medicine\u2019s consumer health information resource, in your library\u2019s newsletters and programs, post links to specific health information on social media, and use MedlinePlus in your reference services. It\u2019s free and includes information from a variety of authoritative sources.<\/p>\n<p>Organize a program highlighting health and wellness and include health information resources such as MedlinePlus, the Medical Library Association\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlanet.org\/p\/cm\/ld\/fid=1717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resources for patients and the public<\/a>, and additional resources included in the NNLM <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/guides\/public-libraries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guide for public libraries.<\/a> Attendees will appreciate these resources to have handy after the program.<\/p>\n<p>Take classes focusing on consumer health and earn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlanet.org\/p\/cm\/ld\/fid=329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consumer Health Information Specialization<\/a> (CHIS) from the Medical Library Association. <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/training\/schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NNLM classes<\/a> are free and many are eligible towards CHIS. Currently NNLM will take care of the CHIS application fee for library staff and those involved in health outreach. Taking classes will help keep you current and aware of consumer health topics and resources and increase confidence in providing consumer health information services.<\/p>\n<p>You and your community members may sign up to receive free consumer health information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/listserv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MedlinePlus Newsletter<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.medlineplus.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MedlinePlus Magazine<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newsinhealth.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NIH News in Health<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Highlight and listen to Helen Osborne\u2019s podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthliteracyoutloud.com\/all-episodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Literacy Out Loud<\/a> with episodes pertaining to the public, organizations, and health professionals<\/p>\n<p>Libraries Transform <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilovelibraries.org\/librariestransform\/health-literacy-toolkit-intro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Literacy Toolkit<\/a>, is an easy way to highlight the role of libraries in providing quality health information to help increase their community\u2019s health literacy. Sign up for a free account and you\u2019ll have access to downloadable posters, bookmarks, table tents and more to print and post around the library in October and all year long.<\/p>\n<p>Reading fictional or real-life stories is a great way to discuss health issues and concerns from various perspectives. Send us your entry on Twitter by tagging @nnlmregion5 and #BookSpinePoetry or e-mail nnlm@uw.edu<\/p>\n<p>10 winners will be selected following National Medical Librarians Month and Health Literacy Month (both observed in the month of October). All participants will be entered into a lottery to receive a free copy of each of the books selected from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/nnlm-reading-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NNLM Reading Club<\/a> &#8211; a total of 15 books to add to your collection and share with your users!
