Watch for our announcement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PNC-MLA<\/strong> is planning a panel session focusing on hospital librarians at their annual conference, Nov. 4-5, 2021. More information will be posted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/pncmla.org\/Nov.2021-Annual-Conference\">PNC-MLA conference<\/a> information website. The <strong>conference is free and open to anyone in NNLM Region 5.<\/strong> Registration opens October 4, 2021.<\/li>\n<li>Coming up on December 9, 2021 NNLM will host a webinar: <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/training\/class\/ransomware-attacks-what-medical-librarians-need-know\">Ransomware Attacks: What Medical Librarians Need to Know<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Q: Like to address, clearing the \u201cclap-trap\u201d and the garbage information being perpetuated within communities. Audience: rural, older adults, college, or any health consumer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NNLM Region 5 is deeply concerned about misinformation. Here are two resources on misinformation that offer practical steps to help address it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cip.uw.edu\/\">University of Washington\u2019s Center for an Informed Public<\/a><\/strong>: They host MisInfoday for high school students each March. Ahead of MisinfoDay 2022, the University of Washington\u2018s Center for an Informed Public, in partnership with Washington State University\u2018s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, has launched a series of \u201cMisinfoDay Monthly\u201d video lessons for secondary school students and educators where high school students interview experts from UW and WSU about mis- and disinformation, media literacy and skills we all need to sort fact from fiction online.<\/li>\n<li>Vivek Murthy, M.D. U.S. Surgeon General, issued <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/surgeon-general-misinformation-advisory.pdf\">Confronting Health Misinformation. The U.S. Surgeon General\u2019s Advisory on Building a Healthy Information Environment<\/a><\/em>,<\/strong> calling misinformation a grave public health threat. The document includes action steps for people from all different societal sectors to take to combat health misinformation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/tools\/sites\/ala.org.tools\/files\/content\/%21%20FINAL%20Media-Lit_Prac-Guide_WEB_040521.pdf\">ALA\u2019s Media Literacy in the Library: a Guide for Library Practitioners.<\/a> 30 page guide (PDF)<\/li>\n<li>The Guide is part of ALA\u2019s larger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/member-news\/2020\/12\/ala-releases-free-practitioners-guide-webinar-series-adult-media-literacy\">Media Literacy for Adults<\/a> project, which includes links to the Guide as well as a series of recorded webinars on the topics of: Meeting Patrons Where They Are; Misinformation and Disinformation; Architecture of the Internet; Civics; Media Landscape and Economics; Media Engagement and Creation<\/li>\n<li>World Health Organization: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/spotlight\/let-s-flatten-the-infodemic-curve\">Navigating the Infodemic<\/a>\u00a0 Good visual aids and information on assessing trustworthiness of information.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/\">MedlinePlus<\/a> has a health topic page on <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/understandingmedicalresearch.html\">Understanding Medical Research<\/a><\/li>\n<li>NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has an interactive resource called <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/understandingmedicalresearch.html\">Know the Science<\/a> and in it there is a module on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/know-science\/facts-health-news-stories\">Know the Facts About Health News Stories<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>KidsHealth.org Teen section has <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/teens\/health-news.html\">Figuring Out Health News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Q: Resource for culturally and linguistically appropriate health information? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ethnomed.org\/\">Ethnomed<\/a> provides information about cultural beliefs, medical issues and other topics related to the health care of immigrants to the US, many of whom are refugees. Try the Clinical https:\/\/ethnomed.org\/Topics (For Patients) section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Q: Are there any patient-friendly resources for the ClinicalTrials.gov website?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MedlinePlus has patient-facing Clinical Trials information on its <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/clinicaltrials.html\">Clinical Trials page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>ClinicalTrials.gov\u00a0is undergoing a modernization effort. NLM will host a webinar: <strong>ClinicalTrials.gov Modernization<\/strong> on October 7, 2021, from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time for an update on this effort. For those who are unable to join the live webinar, a recording and slides will be available.
