{"id":19859,"date":"2021-10-20T08:30:55","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T08:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/?p=19859"},"modified":"2021-10-19T21:36:34","modified_gmt":"2021-10-19T21:36:34","slug":"health-literacy-month-digital-literacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/health-literacy-month-digital-literacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Literacy Month: Digital Literacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthliteracymonth.org\/home\">Health Literacy Month<\/a>, we are focusing on <strong>digital literacy. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/global-coordination-mechanism\/working-groups\/digital_hl.pdf\">World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0defines digital health literacy as \u201cthe ability to seek, find, understand, and appraise health information from electronic sources and apply the knowledge gained to addressing or solving a health problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The current global pandemic has heightened our reliance on digital communications \u2013 think telehealth, education, commerce, social connections \u2013 and has brought the digital divide into sharp focus. A 2019 survey found more than 21 million people in the United States still lack internet access. That includes 27 percent of rural Americans (nearly three in ten) as well as 2 percent of city dwellers and 44 percent of adults living in households with incomes below $30,000 (Winslow, 2019).<\/p>\n<p>Libraries play a crucial role in communities by bridging that digital divide, from loaning hot spots and digital devices to offering both assistance and formal instruction in using digital technology to \u201cseek, find, understand and appraise\u2026.knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help, NNLM has partnered with Wisconsin Health Literacy to offer digital health literacy skill-building resources.
