{"id":21183,"date":"2024-01-16T19:22:18","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/?p=21183"},"modified":"2024-01-16T19:22:18","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:22:18","slug":"region-5-hosting-virtual-library-carpentry-workshop-march-2024-register-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/region-5-hosting-virtual-library-carpentry-workshop-march-2024-register-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Region 5 Hosting Virtual Library Carpentry Workshop March 2024: Register Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Region 5 is excited to announce that we will be hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/training\/class\/region-5-library-carpentry-workshop-march-2024-session\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free online Library Carpentry workshop<\/a> on <strong>March 19 \u2013 21, 2024 from 12:30p.m. \u2013 1:00p.m. Pacific Time, with an optional office hour each day from 12:00p.m. &#8211; 12:30p.m.<\/strong> We have 25 spots available and are<strong> prioritizing equitable geographic representation of members in Region 5\u202f(Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, <\/strong>and<strong> U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Library Carpentry focuses on building software and data skills within library and information-related communities. Their hands-on, approachable workshops empower people in a variety of roles to use software and data in their own work and support effective, efficient, reproducible practices.\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/librarycarpentry.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about Library Carpentry on their website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this 3-day interactive, hands-on virtual workshop you will learn core data skills to help you build confidence in working with data in library- and information-related settings. During the March 2024 workshop, we will be covering the following lessons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycarpentry.org\/lc-data-intro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introduction to Working with Data (Regular Expressions)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycarpentry.org\/lc-open-refine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenRefine<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycarpentry.org\/lc-spreadsheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tidy Data for Librarians<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/librarycarpentry.org\/lc-shell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The UNIX Shell<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/librarycarpentry.org\/lc-git\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introduction to Git<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Learning Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut through the jargon terms and phrases of software development and data science and apply concepts from these fields in library tasks;<\/li>\n<li>Identify and use best practices in data structures;<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to programmatically transform and map data from one form to another;<\/li>\n<li>Work effectively with researchers, IT, and systems colleagues;<\/li>\n<li>Automate repetitive, error prone tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Registration Process<\/strong><br \/>\nLibrary Carpentry workshops are open to all, and the training will focus on skills for library workers. We encourage anyone interested in Library Carpentry skills to apply for registration; no prior knowledge is needed.\u202f<strong>We are prioritizing equitable geographic representation of members in Region 5\u202f(Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, <\/strong>and<strong> U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States). <\/strong>If we are unable to fill all 25 spots with Region 5 participants, we will be accepting non-Region 5 applicants on a first-come, first-serve basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To be considered for enrollment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/training\/class\/region-5-library-carpentry-workshop-march-2024-session\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">please apply by Tuesday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m. PT<\/a><\/strong>. We will notify you of your enrollment or wait list status by Wednesday, February 21st at 6:00 p.m. PT.
