{"id":21858,"date":"2025-10-07T08:00:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T08:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/?p=21858"},"modified":"2025-10-07T21:16:42","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T21:16:42","slug":"membership-colleges-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/membership-colleges-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"NNLM Region 5 Membership: Colleges and Universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is the second post in a 4-part <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/tag\/nnlm-membership\/\">series on membership in NNLM Region 5<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>What is Membership?<\/h1>\n<p>Membership in the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) is an opportunity to connect with regional NNLM staff and other member organizations who share in the goal of improving access to health information.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\">Membership<\/a>\u00a0is open to all institutions or organizations who share the work of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/about\">NNLM\u2019s mission<\/a>. Membership is free and allows member organizations to apply for funding from their NNLM region. All members are listed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">Membership Directory<\/a>. The membership directory lists all member organizations across the country, and those members are managed regionally.<\/p>\n<p>The NNLM includes 8,816 members across 50 states and U.S. Territories. Of those,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;region_8%5B5%5D=5&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">809 organizations<\/a>\u00a0are located in NNLM Region 5.<\/p>\n<h1>NNLM Region 5 Membership: Colleges and Universities<\/h1>\n<p>Colleges and Universities are a cornerstone of Region 5\u2019s membership. Region 5 members include 40 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;organization_types_319%5BAcademic+Health+Sciences+Library+%28Higher+Education%29%5D=Academic+Health+Sciences+Library+%28Higher+Education%29&amp;region_8%5B5%5D=5&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">Academic Health Sciences Libraries<\/a>, 40 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;organization_types_319%5BCollege+or+University+%28Excluding+Community+Colleges%29%5D=College+or+University+%28Excluding+Community+Colleges%29&amp;region_8%5B5%5D=5&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">Colleges or Universities<\/a>, 45 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;organization_types_319%5BCollege+or+University+Library+%28Excluding+Community+Colleges%29%5D=College+or+University+Library+%28Excluding+Community+Colleges%29&amp;region_8%5B5%5D=5&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">College or University Libraries<\/a>, 52 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;organization_types_319%5BCommunity+College%5D=Community+College&amp;region_8%5B5%5D=5&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">Community Colleges<\/a>, and 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/membership\/directory?combine=&amp;organization_types_319%5BCommunity+College+Library%5D=Community+College+Library&amp;region_8%5B5%5D=5&amp;city=&amp;postal_code=\">Community College Libraries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21860 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/10\/Picture4-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"This bar graph shows the distribution of academic members. These awards funded a wide range of programming, training, library collection development, and professional development opportunities, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/funding\/projects\/923\">multi-year funding agreement to the University of Alaska Anchorage Medical Library<\/a> to improve the quality of life and health for Alaska\u2019s citizens by providing information outreach services to the healthcare workforce and to public libraries, especially in rural areas, over a five-year period from May 2021 through April 2026.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/funding\/projects\/190\">Outreach &amp; Engagement Award to California State University, Chico<\/a> to serve rural people in northern California by improving their access to medical information through trained community health navigators in rural remote areas on the use of MedlinePlus and other high quality, vetted, reliable health information resources.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/funding\/projects\/839\">Outreach &amp; Engagement Award to the University of Washington, Addictions, Drug &amp; Alcohol Institute<\/a> to develop a free online resource of accurate, compassionate, and non-stigmatizing images to be used in outreach and educational work for use in health information about substance use disorders for a range of audiences, including information about harm reduction, treatment, prevention, and recovery for researchers, health care providers, the public health and addiction workforces, and the general public.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/funding\/projects\/193\">Data Engagement Award to the University of Hawai&#8217;i at M\u0101noa Library<\/a> for the development of a biomedical data management and data sharing course optimized for Hawai\u02bbi researchers and students, culminating in a live symposium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funding isn\u2019t the only draw to membership for academic members, many participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/resources\/docline\">DOCLINE<\/a>, NLM\u2019s interlibrary loan routing service, and register for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/training\/schedule\">NNLM\u2019s classes and webinars<\/a>.
