{"id":4541,"date":"2011-06-23T15:31:46","date_gmt":"2011-06-23T22:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nnlm.gov\/pnr\/dragonfly\/?p=4541"},"modified":"2026-02-03T16:12:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:12:45","slug":"westpas-summer11","status":"archive","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/westpas-summer11\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Training: Protecting Cultural Collections: Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Space is still available for this free workshop for all types of libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and city and county record offices.\u00a0 There is no charge to the institution, but <a title=\"WESTPAS workshop registration\" href=\"http:\/\/tiny.cc\/ZePOL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-registration<\/a> is required.\u00a0 Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) is offering a free 2-part disaster preparedness and response workshop for cultural property:<\/p>\n<p>Everett, WA:<\/p>\n<p>Part 1: Friday, July 8, 2011 9:00 am &#8211; 4:00 pm<br \/>\nPart 2: Friday, August 19, 2011 9:00am &#8211; 4:00 pm<\/p>\n<p>Location: Everett Public Library<br \/>\n2702 Hoyt Ave., Everett, WA\u00a0 98201<\/p>\n<p>This training is part of a coordinated regional approach to raising awareness about disaster planning for collecting institutions throughout the Western United States.\u00a0 It is free to participants who will develop an institutional disaster plan for their collections as an outcome.\u00a0 More than one person per institution is welcome to attend.\u00a0 Pre-registration is required.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Workshop instructor:<\/p>\n<p>Gary Menges, Preservation Administrator, University of Washington Libraries<\/p>\n<p>Outcomes:<\/p>\n<p>Protecting Cultural Collections workshops are presented in 2 parts to help participants produce the following outcomes for institutional disaster preparedness.\u00a0 Attendees will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete a disaster plan by the end of Part 2<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to train staff to implement your plan effectively<\/li>\n<li>Set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for your collections<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to use practical decision-making skills during an emergency<\/li>\n<li>Experience salvage procedures for books, documents, and non-print media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The workshop&#8217;s two parts are scheduled several weeks apart.\u00a0 Participants will prepare short assignments prior to the first session.\u00a0 Between the sessions, they will undertake additional assignments, resulting in a completed disaster plan at the end of Part 2.\u00a0 Upon completion, the institution will be invited to join the informal network of WESTPAS trained personnel to receive 24\/7 emergency assistance within the region.<\/p>\n<p>Who Should Attend?<\/p>\n<p>Administrators and staff responsible for decision-making in all types of libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, city and county record offices.\u00a0 By registering for the workshop, institutions commit to supporting their attendees(s) in completing a disaster plan that focuses on collections.\u00a0 The institution is encouraged to send two attendees to be able to work together on the disaster preparedness activities.<\/p>\n<p>Cost<\/p>\n<p>There is no charge to the institution.\u00a0 Funding has been provided by the National Endowment for Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>Registration<\/p>\n<p>Pre-registration is required.\u00a0 Register online at: <a title=\"WESTPAS workshop registration\" href=\"http:\/\/tiny.cc\/ZePOL\">http:\/\/tiny.cc\/ZePOL<\/a>.
