{"id":8433,"date":"2013-02-21T12:09:52","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T20:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nnlm.gov\/pnr\/dragonfly\/?p=8433"},"modified":"2026-02-03T16:36:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:36:07","slug":"digital_stewardship","status":"archive","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/digital_stewardship\/","title":{"rendered":"National Digital Stewardship Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce its participation in the inaugural year of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalpreservation.gov\/ndsr\/\">National Digital Stewardship Residency (NDSR)<\/a>, a ground-breaking new program created by the Library of Congress (LC) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).<\/p>\n<p>The program enables 10 recent Master\u2019s program graduates in relevant fields to complete a paid nine-month residency at various institutions in the Washington, DC area. Beginning in September 2013, accepted residents will attend an intensive two-week digital stewardship workshop at the Library of Congress. Thereafter, residents will move to a host institution to work on significant digital stewardship projects. These projects will allow them to acquire hands-on knowledge and skills involving the collection, selection, management, long-term preservation, and accessibility of digital assets. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalpreservation.gov\/ndsr\/hosts.html\">entire list of projects<\/a> is available on the NDSR Web site.<\/p>\n<p>NLM will host a resident to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalpreservation.gov\/ndsr\/documents\/NLM.pdf\">develop a thematic Web archive collection<\/a>.\u00a0 The resident will create a collection of Web content on a specific theme or topic, such as medicine and art or the e\u2010patient movement. This project builds on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/news\/nlm_web_content_collection.html\">pilot Web archive collection<\/a> completed by NLM last year and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.loc.gov\/digitalpreservation\/2012\/10\/developing-a-health-and-medicine-blogs-collection-at-the-u-s-national-library-of-medicine\/\">featured in LC\u2019s The Signal in October 2012<\/a>. The final Web archive collection will become part of the permanent collection of NLM, the world\u2019s largest biomedical library.\u00a0 The resident will be embedded in NLM\u2019s History of Medicine Division under the mentorship of Christie Moffatt, Manager, Digital Manuscripts Program.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to NLM, the inaugural NDSR host institutions include Association of Research Libraries, Dumbarton Oaks, Folger Shakespeare Library, Library of Congress, National Security Archive, PBS, Smithsonian Institution Archives, World Bank, and University of Maryland Libraries and Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>LC and IMLS are accepting applications for the NDSR until April 5, 2013.\u00a0 Applicants can apply online to be a part of NDSR\u2019s inaugural class.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce its participation in the inaugural year of the National Digital Stewardship Residency (NDSR), a ground-breaking new program created by the Library of Congress (LC) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
