Printing: an Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I first heard about 3D printing, I assumed it was some sort of gimmick &#8211; an expensive gadget that people could use to &#8220;print&#8221; their own hokey plastic figurines. \u00a0In reality though, this is far from the truth and while expensive, these devices have the capability to create some very cool and also practical objects. \u00a0A 3D printer is a machine that prints multi-layer objects from digital models created with computer aided design (CAD) software\u00a0programs. \u00a0Unlike traditional office printers, 3D printers do not print in ink. \u00a0There is a wide range of substances that objects can be printed from &#8211; depending on the desired outcome &#8211; from plastics to food stuffs. \u00a0Having Engineering labs at the University of Washington provides a great visual look at how 3D printing works.<\/p>\n<p>3D printers have a multitude of uses and potential uses that are being explored across domains. <!--more-->\u00a0Here are a few links to illustrate the diversity of uses for this technology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 12.986111640930176px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/05\/24\/3d-printed-ear-princeton\/\">A bionic ear<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.psfk.com\/2013\/03\/3d-printed-gummies.html\">Gummi &#8220;people&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2013\/13\/130524-3d-printer-pizza-space-tracheal-splint-baby\/\">Pizza for astronauts<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To check out some objects that have been created, beyond those that have garnered media attention, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/\">Thingiverse<\/a>\u00a0is a website where individuals can share images of and patterns for objects and where other users can download the patterns to make their own.<\/p>\n<p>While the anticipated impact on the manufacturing industry is evident, of particular interest is the potential utility 3D printing may have down the road in health care. \u00a0It is not far-fetched to imagine this technology having a major impact in this area and techniques emerge to custom print prosthetics or bioengineer tissue. \u00a0Take for instance <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/07\/02\/3d-printed-duck-foot\/?utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Mashable+%28Mashable%29&amp;utm_cid=Mash-Product-RSS-Pheedo-All-Partial&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_source=feedburner\">the story of this duck<\/a> who received a silicone printed replacement foot and was able to walk again. \u00a0Seeing the duck run across the grass with his new foot is touching and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/3-d-printed-windpipe-gives-infant-breath-of-life-1.13085\">the story of this infant <\/a>who received a 3D printed airway splint to treat his\u00a0tracheobronchomalacia is incredible. \u00a0Like all technologies, 3D printers have fallen drastically in price since they first became commercially available and some models are being marketed for use in the home. \u00a0The availability of this technology to a wider audience has created some interesting questions and concerns. \u00a0One issue that has been in the news a lot lately is the ability of individuals to print <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/the-newest-3d-printed-gun-is-far-more-dangerous-for-muc-508921619\">guns<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/forget-3d-printed-guns-here-are-some-3d-printed-shotgu-509358801?utm_source=feedly\">bullets<\/a> at home, circumventing laws and regulations around firearms. \u00a0Perhaps more interesting for librarians and information professionals to consider though are some of the copyright concerns involved with both the design models involved as well as the finished objects. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/readwrite.com\/2013\/02\/20\/3d-printing-will-be-the-next-big-copyright-fight#awesm=~obp83iZl2nk33A\">This blog post by Readwrite<\/a>\u00a0provides a brief summary of the current state of potential legal battles around intellectual property and object replication.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">Some libraries have begun to offer 3D printer access for patrons, with public libraries incorporating them into\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/oedb.org\/ilibrarian\/a-librarians-guide-to-makerspaces\/\">MakerSpaces<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/article\/20130613\/NEWS05\/130619888\/chicago-public-library-welcomes-first-fab-lab\">FabLabs<\/a>\u00a0and some academic libraries have begun to offer 3D printing services.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">\u00a0Models vary across academic libraries as to policies for the printers, a thread on this topic recently lit up the code4lib listserv discussing the potential policy considerations when providing a 3D printer for patron use for ranging from copyright\u00a0<\/span><\/span>enforcement<span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">\u00a0to support and cost structures. \u00a0The 3D printer in <\/span><\/span>Dalhousie University&#8217;s Learning Commons<span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\"> is available for use at a price of of $1 per hour and the 3D printing service provided by The University of Alabama Libraries, as described in <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\" href=\"http:\/\/www.istl.org\/13-spring\/refereed1.html\">this Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship article<\/a><span style=\"font-size:
