Thanks, Robin!<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugoverdose\/epidemic\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opioid abuse an epidemic<\/a>, calling it a serious public health issue. Two states, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2017\/05\/03\/78233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.maryland.gov\/2017\/03\/01\/hogan-rutherford-administration-declares-state-of-emergency-announces-major-funding-to-combat-heroin-and-opioid-crisis-in-maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland<\/a>, have recently declared states of emergency in response to the opioid crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><i>NIH MedlinePlus<\/i> magazine has an overview to help readers <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/magazine\/issues\/fall16\/articles\/fall16pg12-14.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">understand the opioid overdose epidemic<\/a>, and the statistics are staggering: an estimated 1.9 million people in the US have a prescription opioid use disorder, while another 586,000 have a heroin use disorder. In 2014 alone, more than 28,000 people died from an opioid overdose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Department of Health &amp; Human Services (HHS) has collected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opioids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resources about the opioid epidemic<\/a>, including resources for health professionals and law enforcement.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Issues that face first responders and first receivers include appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), treatment for overdoses, and coping with stress. The National Library of Medicine provides access to resources for responders, health professionals, and the general public:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>For <\/b><b>f<\/b><b>irst <\/b><b>r<\/b><b>esponders and <\/b><b>h<\/b><b>ealthcare <\/b><b>p<\/b><b>rofessionals: <\/b>Find links to detailed drug information about <a href=\"https:\/\/druginfo.nlm.nih.gov\/drugportal\/category\/analgesics,%20opioid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opioids on Drug Information Portal,<\/a> and information about <a href=\"https:\/\/druginfo.nlm.nih.gov\/drugportal\/rn\/465-65-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naloxone<\/a>.
