The book and tablet depict the mission to build and manage quality collections and provide hands-on service to state government. Each page of the book changes in form and color to represent new discoveries, forward movement, responsiveness, and transformation.<\/p><\/div>\n

Congratulations to the State Library of Ohio<\/a>, a\u00a0Greater Midwest Region member organization. On Friday, August 4th, the library hosts an Open House<\/a> to celebrate 200 years of providing excellent service\u00a0to the state of Ohio: its government,\u00a0librarians, and\u00a0Buckeye residents.<\/p>\n

Governor Thomas Worthington established the library in 1817 with\u00a0a 509-book collection to be used by the\u00a0state legislator. During its longevity<\/a>, the library has restructured, remodeled, and reorganized several times.\u00a0In early June, I had the pleasure of\u00a0touring the library at its current location, 274 East\u00a0First Avenue, Columbus. The historic Jeffrey Mining\u00a0Manufacturing<\/a> building has been transformed into an expansive,\u00a0state-of-the art facility\u00a0with space for rare and valuable collections,\u00a0six public meeting rooms,\u00a0and\u00a0offices for the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science Columbus Program.<\/p>\n

For\u00a0several months, the library staff has worked\u00a0tirelessly preparing for the birthday party. Several exhibits of special collections and memorabilia are on display. Not to be missed is the Traveling Libraries, the first “bookmobile.” I encourage you to\u00a0learn more about the State Library of Ohio<\/a> and its\u00a0Bicentennial <\/a>Celebration<\/a> and to visit.<\/p>\n

Thomas Harper, the first State Librarian of Ohio, created this original accession register on December 25, 1817. The register begins with the 509 books Governor Thomas Worthington purchased to establish the library.<\/p><\/div>\n
