More than 2 billion pounds of PCBs were purposely manufactured in the United States and sold by Monsanto under the trade name Aroclor. They were banned from sale in 1979 when the public learned that they were likely carcinogens. Now, these chemicals are known to cause cancer, disrupt hormones, and are implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and autism. Unfortunately, although Aroclors were banned from sale, they were not banned from use. They remain in many devices and building materials. This talk will summarize the latest research on PCBs, especially PCBs in air of schools, where they remain present in caulking, adhesives, and electrical equipment.

Endocrine Disruptors in Environmental Health
February 21, 2023
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST
Register

Curious about endocrine disruptors? This presentation will introduce the phenomenon of endocrine disruption, the inference of normal hormonal processes in the human endocrine system by chemicals and pollutants in our environment. Participants will learn about historical discoveries and recent scientific findings. Approaches to address the issue, including chemical avoidance and political advocacy, will be discussed.

Accelerating the Speed and Scale of Medical Discovery with Real-World Data: Epic Research and Cosmos
February 22, 2023
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST
Register

Epic Research is a journal designed to facilitate the rapid sharing of knowledge with researchers, healthcare professionals, and other learners to help solve medical, public health, and healthcare industry problems. While traditional research continues to serve as a primary source of information to inform clinical practice, Epic Research works to provide a new kind of analysis focused on making good data available sooner rather than perfect data available too late. It is powered by Cosmos, a database that combines billions of clinical data points from more than 167 million unique patients from 185 healthcare organizations to form a high quality, representative, and integrated data set that is being used to change the health and lives of people everywhere. In this one-hour webinar, Danessa Sandmann, MPH, will discuss the creation of Epic Research during the COVID-19 pandemic, describe their unique Dual-Team study approach, highlight their methodology and publishing processes, and share key findings and recommended actions from a few recent publications.

Sources of Airborne PCBs in Schools February 8, 2023 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM CST Register Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are a set of human-made chemicals that are found in the environment worldwide.
