{"id":15891,"date":"2024-01-10T08:59:36","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T14:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_6\/?p=15891"},"modified":"2024-01-10T08:59:36","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T14:59:36","slug":"calling-all-lis-and-ischool-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_6\/2024\/01\/calling-all-lis-and-ischool-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Calling all LIS and iSchool Students!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are excited to announce that we are hosting a <strong>free Data Carpentries Workshop<\/strong> for LIS and iSchool students on February 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> from 9am &#8211; 4pm CT.\u00a0 If you are a student, please consider <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/E466uvJU3Jhyg5A97\">registering<\/a> \u2013 if you know a student, please forward this information to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Kind of Workshop?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/datacarpentry.org\/\">Carpentries Workshops<\/a> focus on building software and data skills within library and information-related communities. The hands-on, approachable workshops can help LIS and iSchool students prepare to work with their own data, and promote data tools and best practices to researchers and faculty in future roles. Prior experience or knowledge in coding or data science is not required, and the instructors put a priority on creating a friendly environment to empower learners and enable data-driven discovery.<\/p>\n<p>In this two-day, interactive workshop, students will learn core software and data skills, with lessons including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datacarpentry.org\/spreadsheets-socialsci\/\">Data Organization in Spreadsheets<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datacarpentry.org\/openrefine-socialsci\/\">Data Cleaning with OpenRefine<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datacarpentry.org\/r-socialsci\/\">Data Analysis and Visualization with R<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No previous coding or data science experience is required. The Workshop is designed with beginners in mind.<\/li>\n<li>You must be enrolled in an LIS or iSchool program presiding in NNLM Region 3 (AR, LA, KS, MO, OK, NE, TX) or Region 6 (IL, IN, IA, MI, MN, OH, WI).<\/li>\n<li>Plan to attend the entirety of the work February 19th and 20th, 9am &#8211; 4pm CT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Registration Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please fill out this <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/E466uvJU3Jhyg5A97\">Google Form<\/a> to register. Registration is limited and will be offered on a first come, first serve basis.
