On the last day of the Data Summit hosted by NCDS, our group received a tour of the NIH Clinical Center. This is the largest hospital devoted to clinical research in the United States. The Clinical Center has made numerous efforts over the years to provide its patients with services that improve their quality of life while receiving long-term care. Some of these services include hosting volunteer musicians to perform for patients, guinea pigs in the children’s room, a school for pediatric patients, and the NIH Patient Library.
The NIH Patient Library was my personal favorite part of the tour. Our group had the chance to meet the patient librarian, Marie Kaplan. She and her staff are doing amazing work to make sure their patients have a “home library away from home”. Some of the offerings outside of borrowing materials include a robot cat named Buttercup for their patients who may miss their pet at home, instruments, tablets, and bluebird tours for patients.
Later, we attended a presentation titled “Research Impact, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence Services and Resources from the NIH Library”. When it comes to Data Science classes, their offerings include, but are not limited to, R training, Python for data science, and data management.
The NIH Library Collection offers over 21,000 eBooks on artificial intelligence. This collection features books on generative AI, large language models, machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. There are other ways to learn about AI through the NIH. This includes their video collection and classes taught by NIH library instructors.
The NIH Library offers numerous training services. These are a few that were shared with our group:
I want to thank the National Center for Data Services for this amazing three-day experience. It was invaluable to meet my fellow interns and mentors in person and get the chance to learn with you all.
