Something new is always happening with graphic medicine in Region 7 and August was a big month with the publication of a new guide, co-hosting a virtual book discussion with the R7 Graphic Medicine Community of Interest (COI) and more.
NNLM has a great slate of guides on a variety of useful topics and now we’re excited to announce the new Graphic Medicine Resource Guide!
The guide was a project of the R7 Graphic Medicine Community of Interest to address questions like, “How do I find graphic medicine titles?” and “What do I do with my collection now that I have it?”
SCSU intern, Bria Lemon-Johnson, sourced the first list of links and created the draft layout that includes tabs for introductory information, LibGuides, Programming Ideas, and Collection Development resources.
This is a living document, so if you have any suggestions for links to add, please reach out to Sarah Levin-Lederer.
On August 13, R7 and the Graphic Medicine COI welcomed 20+ participants from across the Network interested in graphic medicine to a discussion of Ripple Effects by Jordan Hart.
With more than 20 people participating, the group was divided into breakout rooms to discuss disability, invisible illness, the uses of superhero comics in graphic medicine and more. The conversations were lively and participants used the discussion guide created by Matthew Noe to help if the conversation lagged.
The discussion was not recorded to allow participants to share personal stories, but further reading suggestions from the conversation included:
Since the feedback for this discussion was overwhelmingly positive, be on the look out for future virtual graphic medicine discussions hosted by the COI.
The new guide joins the existing R7 graphic medicine page with resources, services and more available to partners in our region.
Request a Graphic Medicine Book Club Kit, a program in a box that you can use with your community. The kits are completely free to you. They loan for eight weeks and include six copies of a book, discussion guide and supporting health information on thirteen different health topics.
Learn more about the Graphic Medicine COI and get involved. The COI is a chance to connect with others in the region interested in and working with graphic medicine. The COI is also a great opportunity to contribute to projects like the NNLM Graphic Medicine Resource Guide and virtual book discussions.
Join an international listserv of people interested in graphic medicine. Emails from the listserv come when a member wants to announce an event, new research or ask questions. This listserv is a great way to connect with librarians, academics, healthcare professionals, creators and more.
