Cars quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures even with the windows open.<\/li>\n<li>Check on elderly family and neighbors to make sure they&#8217;re drinking enough water and staying cool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/disasters\/extremeheat\/specificgroups.html\">CDC\u2019s Protecting Vulnerable Groups from Extreme Heat page<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stay Cool, Stay Healthy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and drinks with caffeine.<\/li>\n<li>Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.<\/li>\n<li>Spend a few hours in air conditioning during the hottest part of the day to help manage body temperature. It\u2019s a great reason to visit your local library.<\/li>\n<li>If you have to be outside, take frequent breaks and rest in the shade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies\/types-of-emergencies\/heat-wave-safety#During\">Red Cross\u2019s Heat Wave Safety page<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health risk<\/strong><strong>s of extreme heat:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Extreme heat can lead to heat illness which can progress to heatstroke.\u00a0 Heatstroke can cause brain damage, organ failure and even death.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to know the early signs of heat illness and treat them accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Muscle cramps<\/li>\n<li>Very heavy sweating<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Thirst<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Weakness<\/li>\n<li>Nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you or someone around you is experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, lie down in a cool place, apply cool clothes, and sip water.\u00a0 If the person loses consciousness or starts having seizures, call 911 immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Know the symptoms of heatstroke.\u00a0 Heatstroke is a medical emergency; call 911 right away.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Irrational behavior<\/li>\n<li>Extreme confusion<\/li>\n<li>Dry, hot, and red skin<\/li>\n<li>Rapid, shallow breathing (panting)<\/li>\n<li>Rapid, weak pulse<\/li>\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<li>Unconsciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000056.htm\">MedlinePlus\u2019s Heat Emergencies page<\/a> to learn more about symptoms and treatments for heat illness.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know how to beat the heat, you\u2019re ready to take advantage of the fun things that summer has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer is a great time to be outside going to the beach or community events, having fun.\u00a0 But with heat waves happening more often and for longer stretches of time, it\u2019s important to stay healthy by being prepared.
