My colleagues in other NNLM regions curated lists highlighting Black\/African-American Health and Anti-Racist resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/psr-latitudes\/african-american-health-anti-racist-resources\/\">Pacific Southwest Region<\/a> with links to African American mental health, anti-racist reading materials, cultural competency, NLM African American and race history, racism in science, and PubMed Central articles about police brutality and African American health.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/mar\/2020\/06\/10\/african-american-health-and-anti-racist-resources\/\">Middle Atlantic Region<\/a> with links to resources related to mental health, funded projects, cultural competency, racism in science and more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/gmr\/2020\/06\/african-american-health-and-anti-racist-resources\/\">Greater Midwest Region<\/a> with links to resources related to mental health, anti-racist reading, NLM African American and race history and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the interest of sharing different resources and with NER\u2019s special initiative focused on graphic medicine, I felt it was important to share graphic medicine by and about Black\/African-American health, as well as anti-racist graphic medicine resources.<\/p>\n<p><em>Graphic Medicine<\/em>\u00a0is comic books and graphic novels that cover topics of health and wellness.\u00a0 The visual format makes the information easier to understand and digest.\u00a0 By reading a personal, non-fiction story, we can learn about issues we may not have experienced ourselves.\u00a0 These stories can also help us feel less alone in our own lives.<\/p>\n<p>From traditionally published graphic novels to webcomics and self-published works, below are some examples of graphic medicine works and resources that address Black\/African-American health and race or racism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whittaylorcomics.com\/\">Whit Taylor<\/a> is a cartoonist and public health professional who has graphic medicine works that often include historical and scientific context for public health and healthcare concepts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thenib.com\/what-is-race\/\">What is Race<\/a> breaks down the concept of race historically, scientifically, socially and anthropologically to help readers better understand and discuss what people mean when they discuss race and racism.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thenib.com\/tuskegee-experiment\/\">African-Americans Are More Likely to Distrust the Medical System. Blame the Tuskegee Experiment<\/a> with Chris Kindred.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thenib.com\/pregnancy-and-race\/\">Black Mothers Face Far Worse Health Outcomes. How Do We Fix It?<\/a> using statistics, the story of Serena Williams\u2019s pregnancy and experience with complications after delivery and her own apprehensions, Taylor discusses the issue of high rates of maternal mortality among Black mothers and what could be done about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using statistics, historical records and stakeholder interviews, <a href=\"https:\/\/wearewyandotte.com\/#getcomichomepage\">We Are Wynadotte (Kansas City, KS) created two comics on redlining<\/a> and how the practice continues to affect the health of their community.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) and the Graphic Novel Round Table <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/rt\/gncrt\/-black-lives-matter-comics-reading-lists\">curated a reading list of graphic novels that highlight Black experiences<\/a>. \u00a0Here are three examples of graphic medicine works on the list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For Kids-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062691194\/new-kid\/\">New Kid by Jerry Craft<\/a> tells the story of Jordan Banks as he works to navigate the culture of his new private school, helping kids understand the feelings of being torn between two worlds and not feeling like you fit into either.<\/li>\n<li>For Teens-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmhbooks.com\/shop\/books\/Drowned-City\/9780544157774\">Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans by Don Brown<\/a> From the publisher, \u201cThe riveting tale of this historic storm and the drowning of an American city is one of selflessness, heroism, and courage\u2014and also of incompetence, racism, and criminality.\u201d Drowned City is the featured title for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/ner\/graphic-medicine-book-club-kits\">Emergency Preparedness and Recovery Graphic Medicine Book Club Kit<\/a> available from NNLM NER.<\/li>\n<li>For Adults-<a href=\"https:\/\/lawrencelindell.com\/#\/from-truth-with-truth\/\">From Truth with Truth by Lawrence Lindell<\/a> is \u201cKinda A Graphic Memoir\u201d that chronicles the author\u2019s life growing-up, love of comics, and his experience with bipolar disorder and PTSD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Looking to make your graphic medicine collections and programming more inclusive?
