{"id":16813,"date":"2022-02-07T17:59:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-07T17:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/?p=16813"},"modified":"2023-06-06T13:10:05","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T13:10:05","slug":"member-spotlight-conway-public-library-nh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/2022\/02\/07\/member-spotlight-conway-public-library-nh\/","title":{"rendered":"Member Spotlight: Conway Public Library (NH)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16814 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Conway-Public-LIbrary-medium-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Conway Public Library \" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Conway-Public-LIbrary-medium-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Conway-Public-LIbrary-medium-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Conway-Public-LIbrary-medium-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Conway-Public-LIbrary-medium-rotated.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Conway Public Library (CPL), in partnership with the Gibson Center for Senior Services and Carroll County Coalition for Public Health, is one of 21 NNLM <em>All of Us<\/em> Community Award recipients for a program called \u201cImproving the Use of the Internet for Health.\u201d\u00a0 The program\u2019s aim is to improve health literacy and facilitate the use of telehealth services in Carroll County, New Hampshire.\u00a0 Read more about the program from Conway Public Library\u2019s Director, David Smolen:<\/p>\n<p>We are hoping to reach our underserved citizens by expanding access, understanding, and participation in internet available healthcare resources.<\/p>\n<p>Starting February 10, 2022, we kick-off a 4-part virtual speaker series through the CPL.\u00a0 The first session is titled \u201cEvaluating Medical Information Online.\u201d Participants will learn how to distinguish between medical misinformation and reliable online resources.\u00a0 Several websites will be recommended.<\/p>\n<p>The second session on Feb. 16<sup>th<\/sup> is titled \u201cWhat is Telemedicine and When Can it be Used?\u201d\u00a0 Participants will learn about the basics of telehealth, when its use is appropriate, and insurance coverage.<\/p>\n<p>The third session on March 10<sup>th<\/sup> is \u201cUnderstanding Clinical Trials.\u201d\u00a0 Participants will learn how clinical trials are initiated, how research participants are recruited, the phases of clinical trials, how data is evaluated and how the final approval for treatments, medications or vaccines is granted.<\/p>\n<p>The final session, on March 17<sup>th<\/sup>, will describe the <em>All of Us<\/em> Research Program\u2014a precision medicine initiative that seeks to enroll over 1 million participants from underserved regions, ages, and ethnic backgrounds with the goal of helping researchers understand more about why people get sick or stay healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested in attending these online programs can register on the website of the Conway Public Library: <a href=\"https:\/\/conwaypubliclibrary.org\/slider\/medical-speaker-series\">https:\/\/conwaypubliclibrary.org\/slider\/medical-speaker-series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the speaker series, we are helping our community use the internet for reliable healthcare services in other ways. Using Community Award funds, the Gibson Center acquired 30 Chromebooks to give to seniors in need of adequate devices.\u00a0 Andrea Libby of Libby Computers and Jeff Beavers of CPL are providing over 60 hours of free training in their use.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the CPL is installing a two-person privacy pod for telehealth visits.\u00a0 Similarly, the Gibson Center is providing a private space for telehealth visits and opening the Gibson Commons Internet Caf\u00e9, located on the first floor of the main building.\u00a0 These booths and the trainings will continue to be available after the grant has ended, as part of ongoing efforts by the CPL and the Gibson Center in a program called Equip, Train and Connect.\u00a0 The need for internet healthcare services and information is not only growing, but rapidly becoming standard; we intend to provide these resources to all community members.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1900, the <strong>Conway (NH) Public Library<\/strong> serves the communities of Conway, Albany, Tamworth, Madison, and Jackson, New Hampshire. CPL is a major source of information on the history of the White Mountain region and is the only public library in the State who is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/network.nhhistory.org\">New Hampshire History Network<\/a>. The library building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>All of Us<\/em><\/strong><strong> Research Program<\/strong> is supported and overseen by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and aims to accelerate health research and medical breakthroughs, enabling individualized prevention, treatment, and care for all of us.
