During the 2021-2026 funding cycle, we\u2019re committed to learning more about the rural communities that make up our R7 and also create and implement new outcome and process evaluation procedures.<\/p>\n<h2>Evaluation Planning<\/h2>\n<p>Focused Outreach has been part of R7 and previously NER\u2019s model of service for 10+ years, but between the COVID pandemic and changes to our service area by adding New York, it was time to redo and recommit to an evaluation plan including better analysis of qualitative data from key informant interviews and standardizing contact tracking for process evaluation.<\/p>\n<h2>Outcomes<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_17475\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17475\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17475\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/06\/Q05_CommunityHealthNeeds_image-300x200.png\" alt=\"Word cloud of answers for &quot;2.Based on your experience with the community, what are the primary health concerns?&quot; from key informant interviews in Berkshire County. Although all rural areas have reported access and transportation issues, communities in Upstate NY, Northern VT, Maine, and Northern NH often have to travel further for services than communities in southern New England&#8211;3+ hours vs. 1-2 hours. Also, for communities that rely on seasonal tourism, some resources and services may be more available during tourist season, but that same tourism may also be pricing out year-round residents.<\/p>\n<p>Key informants, when asked about the health needs of their communities and accessing health information online, often mention social determinants of health instead of mentioning specific health conditions or topics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>THEMES:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17476\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17476\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17476\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/06\/Q5_HealthConcerns-300x200.png\" alt=\"Word cloud of Northern VT responses to &quot;2.Based on your experience with the community, what are the primary health concerns?&quot; With Transportation being the biggest followed by senior health, mental health, migrant framer worker, substance use, outdoor activity and access to healthcare\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/06\/Q5_HealthConcerns-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/06\/Q5_HealthConcerns.png 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/strong> <strong>Northern VT answers to &#8220;Based on your experience with the community, what are the primary health concerns?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Access to housing, healthcare including specialists, and other services<\/li>\n<li>Transportation-access to transportation and needing to travel long distances<\/li>\n<li>Information evaluation needs<\/li>\n<li>Poor internet connectivity<\/li>\n<li>High cost for internet<\/li>\n<li>Unreliable internet<\/li>\n<li>Relying on libraries\/CBOs for internet access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the last two years, we\u2019ve also seen some emerging overarching health topics come up frequently in interviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HEALTH TOPICS<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mental Health<\/li>\n<li>Substance Use<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Health<\/li>\n<li>Senior Health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Long Term Partner Engagement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also tracking ongoing partner engagement with YR1 partners.<\/p>\n<p>Essex and Hamilton Counties, NY:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Member Spotlight: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/2021\/09\/09\/member-spotlight-jill-tarabula\/\">Jill Tarabula, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital September 2021<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Jill was also featured on an episode of the NNLM Podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/podcast\/medical-librarians-a-story-from-region-7\">Medical Librarians: A Story from Region 7<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Funding-collection development, YR1, YR2 and YR3<\/li>\n<li>YR3 funding Historic Saranac Lake, Elizabethtown Hospital<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aroostook County, ME:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Member Spotlight: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/2022\/12\/18\/member-spotlight-nancy-holmquist\/\">Nancy Holmquist, Cary Medical Center December 2022<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Process Evaluation:<\/h2>\n<p>Keeping consistent tracking sheets that show who we\u2019ve reached out to, who has engaged in the process and more has allowed us to start to answer questions like:<\/p>\n<p>How many organizations do we contact to get one interview?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In YR2 we had an overall 43% initial contact to interview rate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s the average time from initial contact and interview?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In YR2 we averaged 14.7 days between initial contact and interview.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given the low interview rate&#8211;14 total interviews across both areas, more data is needed to see how consistent these numbers are and to see what might affect the willingness of contacts to participate and how long it takes to set up an interview.<\/p>\n<h2>YR3 Next Steps<\/h2>\n<p>In YR3, we\u2019ll be working to standardize how we capture data and working on best practices for qualitative data analysis, including key word standardization and data entry.<\/p>\n<h2>YR 3 Focused Outreach<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ll be in Sullivan and Cheshire Counties, NH and Litchfield County, CT this year.
