Region 7 is conducting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/guides\/region-7-focused-outreach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Focused Outreach<\/a> to Cheshire and Sullivan Counties, NH and Litchfield County, CT. My colleagues Sarah Levin-Lederer and Bennie Finch made separate trips. For my Cheshire County visits, I identified libraries by looking at the NNLM Membership Directory. I reached out to contacts made at the New Hampshire Library Association meeting. I met with Marti Fiske at Keene Public Library and Celia Rabinowitz at Keene State College. These town-and-gown libraries are great collaborators. <span class=\"TextRun SCXW24721068 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24721068 BCX9\">Mason Library at Keene State shares an online catalog with Keene Public Library. Cardholders can borrow physical items from either library. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW24721068 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW24721068 BCX9\">At the <a href=\"https:\/\/keenenh.gov\/keene-public-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keene Public Library<\/a>, Marti noted that <\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">true reference questions have dropped in the last 5-10 years. Patrons come into the library with an idea of what they want. They are not asking for advice on where to look for information. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reference librarians attempt to guide patrons to reputable sources. <span class=\"TextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\">Social <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\">services <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\">agencies <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\">schedule office hours at the library. Several of these organizations <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\">assist<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW128077795 BCX9\"> with health and mental health issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW128077795 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keene State College is on Main Street and very accessible to the public.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\"> People<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> come into the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.keene.edu\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mason Library<\/a> to use computers and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to read print newspapers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DVDs are available for loan\u2014cost of streaming services is prohibitive for many. She gently guides them toward reputable internet resources. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fewer patrons are using the library computers, but they do use the Wi-Fi for their own devices\u2014both inside and outside the library. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Julie<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW150784732 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW150784732 BCX9\"> interfiles health information with the book collection. Brochures and information packets (including NLM resources) are located in the women\u2019s health section. Clai Lasher-Sommers told me that patrons in Chesterfield <span data-contrast=\"auto\">still want books for health information. She did heavy weeding when she arrived as director nearly one year ago. She would like to build a special section for reliable health information. She would appreciate guidance on purchasing health information books, especially for specialized diets\u2014gluten-free, Mediterranean, FODMAP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">K<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ate assumes that people google for health information.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She has health resources on the library\u2019s website (EBSCO Health Source and MedlinePlus), but she says that they do not get any hits. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The library does lots of programming, sometimes three programs in one day!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is no senior center or recreation center in town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Region 7 hopes to provide online training on MedlinePlus for the<span class=\"TextRun SCXW41519683 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41519683 BCX9\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsl.dncr.nh.gov\/librarians\/library-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW41519683 BCX9\">Nubanusit<\/span><\/a><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41519683 BCX9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsl.dncr.nh.gov\/librarians\/library-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Library Association<\/a> in 2024. This organization serves some of the smallest libraries in New Hampshire.
