We are hearing this theme in our focused outreach work, in classes such as Connecting Older Adults to Health Information, have spotlighted this topic in the NNLM Reading Club, and presented on this topic in conferences. In this blog post, we celebrate the 63 million caregivers in the United States and share resources for and about caregiving.<\/p>\n<p>Caregiving comes in many forms, and you may not even realize that you are a caregiver.<\/p>\n<p>Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady and Founder of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, began bringing attention to caregivers more than 5 decades ago. Caregivers are often unseen and unsupported by our current systems, but we will likely all be affected by caregiving at some point in our lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><em>&#8220;There are only four kinds of people in the world\u2013those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> -Rosalynn Carter<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19129 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/Bag-BFLI-300x224.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/Bag-BFLI-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/Bag-BFLI.png 603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In April 2026, George Strawley (NNLM Region 4) presented at the Public Library Association Conference on Empowering Libraries to Support Caregivers. This presentation was developed by George, Carolyn Martin (NNLM Region 5) and Bennie Finch (Region 7).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19123 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/BFLI-Memory-kits-300x195.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Bennington Free Library catalog showing Memory Kits. \" width=\"226\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/BFLI-Memory-kits-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/BFLI-Memory-kits-1024x665.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/BFLI-Memory-kits-768x499.png 768w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/BFLI-Memory-kits.png 1239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We provided some statistics about caregiving, resources for caregivers, and programming ideas that can support caregivers including some examples from NNLM Region 7 Members. <a href=\"https:\/\/lor.nnlm.gov\/op\/op.Download_Share.php?documentid=6709\">The slides are available for download<\/a> to review a variety of resources and ideas for supporting caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Some of the highlights<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/pri\/topics\/ltss\/family-caregiving\/caregiving-in-the-us-2025\/\">2025 report from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving called, \u201cCaring in the U.S.\u201d<\/a> gives us a snapshot about caregivers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">63 million, 1 in 4 adults in the United States are caregivers\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This reflects a 50% increase since 2015. The same report states that those receiving care are at all stages of life but are primarily older adults and nearly half of those are 75 or older. Care recipients include family, friends, and relatives across all stages of life. Many resources are helpful to any caregiver.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/womenshealth.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/fact-sheet-caregiver-stress.pdf\">Caregiver Stress<\/a>, Office of Women\u2019s Health<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Programming Ideas<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider partnering with local agencies on programming, such as your Area Agency on Aging or Extension Services, who may have speakers on topics such as finances, healthy eating, and more.<\/li>\n<li>Host information sessions about caregiving and caregiver services<\/li>\n<li>Offer to be a place for a support group<\/li>\n<li>Host a Book Club with resources from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/resources\/reading-club\">NNLM Reading Club<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Create a Book Display for National Caregiver\u2019s Month in November<\/li>\n<li>Provide grab and go collection items that support caregivers<br \/>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19136 alignleft\" style=\"font-size: 16px\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_7\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/COATHI-LinkedIn-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Network of the National Library of Medicine.
