During Health Literacy Month this October, we can raise awareness of how clear communication and access to reliable health information support better health outcomes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Health literacy occurs when health information and services created for the public match with people&#8217;s capacity to find, understand, and use them (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahrq.gov\/health-literacy\/index.html\">Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>What is health literacy?<\/h2>\n<p>Health literacy involves the information that people need to be able to make good decisions about health. There are two parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Personal health literacy<\/strong> is about how well a person can find and understand the health information and services that they need. It is also about using the information and services to make good health decisions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organizational health literacy<\/strong> is about how well organizations help people find the health information and services that they need. It also includes helping them use that information to make good health decisions. <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/healthliteracy.html\">Health Literacy: MedlinePlus<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visit NNLM Guide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/resources\/public-health-resources\/intro-health-literacy\">An Introduction to Health Literacy <\/a>to learn more about why health literacy is important and who is at risk and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/resources\/health-literacy-framework\">Health Literacy Framework | NNLM<\/a> for more information concerning factors that influence health literacy.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking for ideas to support health literacy?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Host a book discussion<\/strong> with resources from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/resources\/reading-club\/topic\/258\">NNLM Reading Club: Health Literacy<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Create a book display.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Share health literacy resources<\/strong> with patrons in person or in a newsletter. Share a confusing health message and invite students or faculty to rewrite it in plain language. Or create a matching game with medical jargon and plain language.
