Abstract: As gender identity becomes a more contentious political topic almost by the day, healthcare professionals increasingly are interested in how they can partner with transgender and gender-expansive patients to provide informed and compassionate care. While reputable resources are readily accessible, searching online for “transgender health” will yield a plethora of results likely to frustrate more than educate. Fortunately, evidence-based resources exist to inform health professionals on the unique medical needs of transgender patients and to help health professionals better understand the social determinants of health that impact transgender and gender-expansive individuals. This presentation will review the ever-changing vocabulary around gender identity and expression, provide an overview of the information needs of both health professionals and patients, and highlight available online resources and other training opportunities that can be shared with health professionals.

Presenter Bio: Dr. Nass practices in West Covina, California, as a Family Physician with additional focus in hospital medicine, addiction medicine, and HIV. He became aware of the health inequities faced by sexual and gender minority individuals while attending the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and began to advocate for comprehensive, compassionate care for everyone regardless of their identities. He has authored protocols for partnering with transgender and gender-expansive youth in the primary care setting, and he regularly leads cultural competence and humility educational sessions at the national and local level. Scott recently has become very busy as the sole provider of gender-affirming healthcare services to inmates in California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities statewide, and he is developing a patient-centered medical home model of care for transgender adults and youth in a Federally Qualified Health Center east of Los Angeles.
