Presenter: Dana Ladd, PhD., Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries, Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences
Abstract: Librarians from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Libraries Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, Community Health Education Center collaborated with the VCU Center on Health Disparities to plan, develop, and teach a series of workshops focused on improving participants’ health literacy and technology skills. The group planned to provide these health literacy workshops in the city’s East End, a historically low-income, food and resource desert.
In 2018, the group applied for and was awarded a $15000.00 NNLM SEA Health Information Outreach Award. They planned and developed six health literacy workshops: evaluating health information/finding consumer health information, mobile apps, health insurance, electronic health records, nutrition and senior health. To increase technology skills, participants were given the opportunity to attend a thirty-minute computer basics class before each health information presentation. Each participant was given a laptop to use during the session.
Webinar participants will learn about this collaboration for health literacy and how the project was developed and implemented in Richmond city’s East End with the support of the Richmond Public Library East End Branch Library. The speaker will also provide an overview of the feedback received by participants and discuss the project’s next steps.
