September is National Preparedness Month, making it a great time to take a renewed look at how prepared we are for the unexpected. Throughout the month, we’ll be hosting webinars designed to make preparedness feel more approachable and actionable. We hope you’ll join us! Can’t attend live? • Informal Weather Education Outreach on September 3 – This one-hour webinar explores best practices in informal weather education outreach and shares successful examples from the Extreme Events Institute and International Hurricane Research Center at Florida International University.
• Severe Weather Engagement: A New Resource from The Healing Library on September 18 – This one-hour training will introduce participants to The Healing Library and its newest resource kit, Severe Weather Engagement.
• Heat, Health, and Disasters: The Role of Libraries on September 22 – This training will examine the health impacts of extreme heat and other disasters and consider how libraries may be affected by and respond to these events.
• Ready NOW: A Framework for Disaster Response in Libraries on September 23 – Developed through a multi-year IMLS-funded project at the University of Maryland, Ready NOW Field Guide is a free, research-based toolkit that helps library staff at every level move from good intentions to grounded action through two core mindsets and three essential tasks focused on relationship-building, co-creation, and internal capacity.
• What the Thermometer Misses: Heat Risk Perception and Trusted Intermediaries on September 24: This session will provide a practical approach for libraries and community partners to assess local risk perceptions and reach populations that existing communication channels may miss.
