Understanding the Opioid Crisis: Where do I begin?: The National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health provide resources for both the general public and health professionals to learn about opioid abuse and overdose prevention and treatment options. We will discuss many of these resources and explore ideas for their use in community outreach education and programs in your library or organization. This 1 hour, online class is appropriate for anyone providing health information to the general public including public and medical librarians, patient or community educators and healthcare professionals. Metrics Toolkit: A Tool for Navigating the Research Metrics Landscape: The Metrics Toolkit is an open access resource aimed at helping researchers, evaluators, and librarians understand and responsibly use research metrics, including bibliometrics and altmetrics. The Toolkit provides evidence-based information about research metrics across disciplines, including how each metric is calculated, where it can be found, and how it should (and should not) be applied. Join this PNR Rendezvous to hear how it can be used by librarians to facilitate research impact outreach and education efforts, helping authors and institutional evaluators gain knowledge about specific metrics and choose appropriate metrics based on the type of impact being considered and the nature of one’s work. Understanding the Basics of Data Storytelling: A one-hour introductory webinar on the fundamentals of effective storytelling using data collected and visualized by librarians for librarians. Library Carpentry Workshop: The NNLM Training Office is pleased to announce a new opportunity for information professionals to build data skills through online Library Carpentry workshops, at no cost to participants. 5 workshops will be offered October through January. DNA to Z: Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing: This webinar class will provide an overview of the history and current state of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing, which has become extremely popular in recent years. The differences between ancestry and health testing will be explored. The veracity of claims commonly made by testing companies will be assessed, and concerns and challenges surrounding these tests will be examined. November 20 at 11:00 a.m. PT. (1 MLA CE) Register

Genetic Counseling Virtual Career Fair
The first Genetic Counseling Virtual Career Fair, hosted by the Western States Regional Genetic Network, is being held on Thursday, October 15, 2020. Information about genetic counseling careers will be offered by the National Society of Genetic Counselors, and exhibit rooms will be live staffed with professionals from 50 masters-level genetic counselor training programs in the U.S. and Canada. Salud America! at UT Health San Antonio has launched Juntos, We Can Stop COVID-19, a digital communication campaign in English and Spanish to help Hispanic/Latino families take action to slow the spread of coronavirus. The campaign features Hispanic/Latino culturally relevant and research-based resources, bilingual fact sheets, infographics and video role model stories.
Sleeve Up to Fight Flu
This season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging everyone to roll their sleeve up for the annual influenza vaccine. By continuing to wear a mask, washing hands often, and getting a flu vaccine we can help stop the spread of flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 this fall and winter season. Additionally, HHS is asking everyone to get vaccinated against the flu by this Halloween and say Boo to the Flu!
