The University of Washington Master’s in Library Science program culminates in a capstone project. Students find an information need and a sponsor to work for, in order to solve the need using all the skills they honed during their program. Two students, Lauren Califano and Shanti Rahim, are excited to work with NNLM Region 5 as their sponsor to create a library toolkit for childbirth and postpartum resources.

Lauren and Shanti are library students with particular interest in the midwifery and doula space, and are excited to bring their information and health literacy skills to assemble a toolkit to help librarians around the region create more inclusive and robust childbirth and postpartum resources.

The goal for the toolkit is to provide librarians with:

  • A guide and steps to assembling your own local resources for your library
  • Curated resources, including an inclusive language guide
  • Service types and examples on what to look for locally
  • A social media kit

The timeline for UW Capstone is from January 2021 to June 2021. The students are currently working on putting this together, using MedlinePlus.

The capstone project will be presented at UW Capstone Gala night on May 24th and the toolkit will be handed off to NNLM on June 4th.
