Data Science at NIH: A Look Back at 2015 and Forward to 2016

On the Data Science at NIH blog, INPUT | OUTPUT, Dr. Phil Bourne, Associate Director for Data Science, shares some key achievements from the Office of Data Science at NIH over the past 22 months and looks ahead to plans for 2016. “A hallmark of our efforts,” he writes, is to be as transparent and open as possible. As such we welcome your input and sincerely hope that 2016 is a good year for however you contribute to data science and its impact on healthcare.” The Office’s vision for 2016 includes the following highlights:

• Furthering training and workforce development efforts with increased emphasis on diversity,
• Revisiting each of the 27 Institutes and Centers of NIH to determine their data-related pain points,
• Making more effective use of the output of the biomedical digital enterprise,
• Continuing plans to move forward with the the Commons concept as a virtual shared space in which such digital output could be sustained and made FAIR (following the principles of data being findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable), and
• Toward the end of the year, beginning to evaluate the Commons.
