New MLA Copyright Publication Released
MLA’s third edition of Copyright Law and the Health Sciences Librarian is now available online. You will need your MLANET username (MLA ID#) and password to access this members-only publication. The electronic document makes it possible for MLA to incorporate changes whenever the law is changed or a new technology creates a need for clarification.
Since the second edition in 1989, dramatic changes in technology and copyright have taken place. This new edition is designed as a practical guide, written in a question-and-answer format, to help librarians address questions related to changes such as digitization, scanning, downloading, Web page building, linking, electronic distribution, and more.
The third edition includes new guidelines for the educational setting that address uses in continuing education, in-service training, patient education, and more. Other new sections include copyright permissions, management guidelines, and a list of copyright Websites and additional resources, with links to key resources such as the Technology Education and Copyright Harmonization Act (TEACH Act) checklist.
Marianne Comegys, MLA’s Governmental Relations Committee (GRC) chair, notes, “On behalf of the GRC Working Group who developed this document, we hope that MLA members will find this revision an informative and useful resource for application of copyright law in your libraries. Your feedback is important, and we welcome your comments as you use this key resource.” Email your comments to GRC staff liaison Mary Langman.
