It’s October, and that means it’s National Medical Librarians Month! What a great time to share with others all the different roles librarians play. This year’s theme will help you cut right to the chase:

Yes, we do that!

Throughout my 23-year career in medical librarianship, I have always found it most rewarding to be involved on interprofessional committees and projects. It provides a wonderful opportunity to show clinicians, researchers, administrators, and community members the diverse skills librarians can bring to the table.

At NNLM, we are dedicated to building your skills. We offer a wide variety of free, high-quality training opportunities so that you will be able to respond, “Yes, I do that!” when asked to:

• Teach your residents how to conduct more effective searches in PubMed
• Quickly locate a public health statistic needed for a grant proposal
• Identify flawed or fake health information
• Develop a comprehensive data management plan
• Use RxNorm to take a more active role on your health IT
• Assess health education materials to determine if they are easy-to-read
• Help a researcher comply with NIH public access policy
• Assist in integrating MedlinePlus resources into your organization’s electronic health record
• Find genetic information that is translated to clinical application
• Collaborate with a community group to design a health promotion program

Take a moment this month to reflect on the diverse work you and your colleagues do, and look for new opportunities to expand your reach. Happy National Medical Librarians Month!
