In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, integrating Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) practices alongside traditional medicine is gaining momentum. As healthcare consumers explore alternative treatments and approaches, we must equip ourselves with the right knowledge and resources to help them make informed decisions. Bobbi Newman of Region 6 teamed up with Margie Sheppard of Region 4 and Abby Dowd of NTO to develop a new online class to provide you with a foundation in complementary and integrative health information.

Our upcoming class, “Exploring Complementary and Integrative Health: Information, Resources, and Evaluation (CIH),” is designed to help you confidently understand the complex world of CIH. This class offers a comprehensive exploration of CIH, including both Eastern and Western perspectives, and delves into various CIH approaches, discussing their associated benefits and risks. We will introduce you to resources and information you can use to help your patrons, patients, and users navigate CIH information.

Throughout this asynchronous class, spanning three weeks on Moodle, you will gain a deep understanding of CIH, encompassing both Eastern and Western medicine viewpoints. Explore the advantages and potential risks associated with CIH practices. Equip yourself with strategies and resources to share with your users to help them discern reliable CIH information and avoid fraudulent claims.

Our class aligns with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) initiatives addressing health misinformation and environmental determinants of health. You’ll also have access to valuable resources from MedlinePlus, PubMed, and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

Objectives:

  • Define complementary and Integrative Health, encompassing both Eastern and Western medicine.
  • Recall various approaches to complementary and Integrative Health.
  • List potential benefits and risks associated with CIH practices.
  • Apply strategies to identify reliable CIH information and avoid scams.
  • Navigate CIH resources effectively, including NCCIH, PubMed, and MedlinePlus.

Join us for the first offering of this class to enhance your ability to guide patients, patrons, and others in understanding the dynamics of CIH and its role in modern healthcare. Register now.
