Musings of an NNLM Intern

During my master’s program at the University of Missouri, I discovered health sciences librarianship through a professional development award given by NNLM Region 3. After that experience, I knew that I wanted to learn more, but I had already exhausted my program’s courses in health and medical librarianship. As a resident of Minnesota, I reached out to Erica Lake of Region 6 to see if there were any internships or projects that I could work on. To my delight, she and her team created a virtual internship that kept me busy this semester.

During my internship, I studied the social determinants of health and how organizations can use health information to improve health equity. I explored many health information websites and databases and experimented with pulling and cleaning health data. I also worked with ArcGIS software and built a map highlighting health resources. I used everything I learned to build a page spotlighting Olmsted County, MN, my place of residence, for the Community Guide to Advance Health Information Equity.

I graduate on May 10th, and although I am not certain where I will land, I feel grateful that this internship kept me in the world of health sciences librarianship, gave me the opportunity to develop some relevant skills, and allowed me to create something that may improve health equity.
