We are excited to announce the addition of three new Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Level 2 classes! As health information professionals, we understand our crucial role in providing reliable, accessible health information to our communities. We invite you to enroll in our newly launched CHIS Level 2 classes and take the next step in your professional journey. These on-demand classes are designed to be engaging and informative. Participating will give you valuable insights and tools to help you better serve your community and advance your career.
New CHIS Level 2 Classes
Each new on-demand class provides one continuing education credit and covers one of the three competencies for CHIS level 2. After completing the three classes, you will need nine more CE hours to complete your class. You can earn those from any of our upcoming courses or recorded classes.
C6: Literacy and Health Literacy
- This module is provided as a separate NNLM class. Learners can register and complete the 1-hour NNLM tutorial Health Literacy On-Demand for CHIS Level 2 credit. This class also qualifies for continuing education toward NCHEC Certified Health Educator Specialist (CHES©) and Certified Nurse Educator credit (CNE)

C7: Technology and Health
- This module explores technology trends such as the benefits & challenges of health smartphone apps, the transformative and disruptive potential of artificial intelligence in health information and healthcare delivery, and current technology trends in healthcare and consumer health such as genetic testing, the digital divide, and health, and personal health records (PHRs) and electronic health records. Content is delivered through readings and a quiz.

C8: Ethics and Legal Issues
- This module delves into ethical and legal issues of providing consumer health information. It identifies various library association codes of ethics and additional professional guidance tools, discusses the importance of ethical principles in guiding our work as health information professionals, and differentiates between providing quality health information versus providing health care advice. Content is delivered through readings, case studies, and a quiz.

ABOUT Bobbi Newman
Bobbi Newman (MLIS, MA) is the Community Engagement and Outreach Specialist for NNLM R6 at the University of Iowa.
She is the author of Fostering Wellness in the Workplace: A Guide for Libraries. She developed the popular NNLM course “Wellness in the Library Workplace.” Bobbi is a mindfulness student and a member of Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH). She currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board for Let’s Move in Libraries.
