PBS and The Gene

PBS has a new documentary airing tonight, April 7 and April 14. The Gene: An Intimate History is a two-episode series based on the best selling book by Siddhartha Mukherjee who also authored The Emperor of All Maladies which was also made into a PBS documentary in 2015.

Mukherjee wrote about a topic that might normally have put most readers to sleep but created an engaging text by incorporating scientific facts, history, and his own personal experiences. This rather thick book about the gene allows many readers to better understand science and its relevancy even to the non-scientific community which is of great importance as genetics becomes more a part of our health. Now the documentary allows even greater access to learn more about genetic science.

In addition to the documentary, an animated series is available where experts explain the gene’s complex mechanisms in simple ways.

Teachers have the opportunity to connect lesson plans to the documentary with companion resources available from PBS LearningMedia. These resources can be paired with short clips from the film.  Whether a teacher or a student, a free account must be created to access.
