Matt Baumann, MS, MA, has joined the National Evaluation Center (NEC) as a developer, a role that will allow him to utilize his skillset to enhance the accessibility, usability, and integrity of biomedical research.
“I have always had an archival mindset and I am really looking forward to working with Digital Systems at Galter to help people access information like the NEC Data Warehouse,” says Baumann. “I am especially excited to bring my knowledge of bioethics to the NEC project, since the NNLM’s stated mission ‘is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public’s health by providing U.S. researchers, health professionals, public health workforce, educators, and the public with equal access to biomedical and health information resources and data.’ “
Baumann earned a master’s degree in Software Engineering from Loyola University in 2016 and recently finished a second master’s degree in Medical Humanities and Bioethics at Northwestern University. For the past six years, Baumann has worked as a developer for the Applied Research Informatics Group within the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute. During his time at NUCATS, Baumann managed Competitions, an open-source tool to run NIH-style peer review of competitions, pilot projects and research proposals, and I2B2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside).
Prior to his education in computer science, Baumann pursued graduate work in classical archaeology and art history, applying his background in research and cataloging to libraries, museums, and archeological excavations. Baumann will also work in collaboration with Galter Health Sciences and Learning Center developers and the NEC to help build and implement evaluation resources and manage the NEC Data Warehouse.
At NEC, he will help to update the NNLM Data Warehouse and work with the standard workflows and processes related to the NNLM DRS (Data Repository System), especially changes to requests processing. Hw will also help users with their queries of the data warehouse.
