Galter Health Sciences Library recently hosted the National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibit entitled “Outside/Inside: Immigration, Migration and Health Care in the United States” from March 13 to April 22. In conjunction with the exhibit, Galter Library organized several activities for the event, including historical displays and a panel conversation with subject-matter experts on immigration, health, and healthcare access in the Chicagoland area.
While the exhibit took a historical look (through images and other documents) at what different immigrant populations have experienced in terms of access to healthcare over the past 130 years, the hybrid- event provided a forum to hear from three different perspectives of the current immigrant experiences at the local level. The panel included presentations from immigrant advocacy groups (Luvia Quiñones from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights), legal experts (Uzoamaka Emeka Nzelibe, Northwestern’s Pritzker School of Law) and clinicians (Namratha Kandula, Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine). The conversation was moderated by NEC’s Verónica Hoyo.
