The Next Generation Matters: Teaching Youth About Climate Change

Empowering the Next Generation: Why Teaching Youth About Climate Change Matters

Featuring APHA’s Climate & Health Youth Education Toolkit

As the impacts of climate change become more visible in our daily lives—stronger storms, warmer seasons, shifting ecosystems—one thing is clear: today’s youth will inherit a planet shaped by the decisions we make right now. That’s why empowering young people with climate knowledge isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

To support this critical mission, the American Public Health Association (APHA) Children’s Environmental Health Committee has developed a dynamic Climate & Health Youth Education Toolkit. This innovative curriculum is designed to help librarians, teachers, public health practitioners, and youth-serving professionals bring climate learning to life.

And now, through an upcoming webinar, educators and community leaders can get an inside look at how to use these resources to inspire informed, engaged young climate champions.

🌱 Why Teach The Youth About Climate Change?

Children today are already witnessing the effects of climate change—from extreme weather events to shifts in local wildlife. Teaching them about these changes:

  • Builds scientific literacy: Youth learn to understand the “why” behind weather patterns, health impacts, and environmental shifts.
  • Cultivates empowerment instead of fear: Knowledge helps replace anxiety with action. When young people understand climate science, they feel more confident about joining solutions.
  • Encourages lifelong sustainability habits: Early education lays the foundation for environmentally responsible choices.
  • Strengthens community resilience: Youth who understand climate risks are better prepared to protect their own health and contribute to local climate solutions.

Climate education isn’t just an academic topic—it’s a public health tool and a pathway to a more sustainable future.

📚 Who Should Attend?

This webinar is perfect for:

  • Librarians planning environmental or STEM programs
  • Teachers seeking fresh, interactive curriculum tools
  • Public health educators
  • Youth program coordinators
  • Anyone passionate about empowering young people with climate knowledge

The toolkit is flexible, accessible, and designed to spark curiosity—making it an excellent resource for educators in both formal and informal learning environments.

You can register here. We hope to see you on Tuesday April 14, 2026, 1:00pm-2:00pm EDT.  The webinar will be recorded, so even if you can’t join us live, register to receive the recording.
