According to the authors three themes tie the work together:

  • the relationship between physiology and anatomy
  • the interrelations among the organ systems
  • and the relationship of each organ system to maintaining a normal functioning state or homeostasis.

To guide the self-learner, the book uses ‘Takeaways’, a few questions at the end of each section of a chapter for key points of learning.  The text itself has been updated or reformatted with more tables and bullet points replacing longer stretches of prose.  Review Questions, and For Further Thought sections also provide learning points for self-guided or instructor-learner situations.
