Christine Newman

What is your title and brief job description?

Data Management Librarian for Region 1. In this role, I support courses and programs related to research data management and other data literacy topics.

Other than COVID, what medical/health topic is on your mind?

Mental health education and especially increasing access to mental health services is often on my mind, as well as the importance of promoting equity and inclusivity in research. How research studies are designed, how we collect data – and who we collect data from – has a powerful impact on how we understand and learn about health and how we combat health disparities.

What advice would you give others who are interested in doing health outreach work in their communities?

Remember the saying that you have two ears and one mouth. Listening to your community – getting to know their struggles and their strengths, the tools they have and the gaps they need filled – is as important to outreach as the information you share or the number of programs you offer. Community outreach starts with community – learning about and seeking to understand the people you want to serve.

Unrelated to health librarianship, what is your favorite indulgence?

I love chocolate! And stories – I am an avid reader/listener of audiobooks, especially science fiction/fantasy stories and memoir.
