The National Library of Medicine (NLM) recently announced Loansome Doc will be discontinued as of July 1, 2019. The number of articles requested in Loansome Doc have been declining since 2002.
PHDL users have been using Loansome Doc in conjunction with their Partner Library to request full text articles within PubMed. The PHDL has been working with our Partner Libraries to develop alternative delivery systems for requesting and delivering articles to participating Public Health Departments. Some Partner Libraries have already reached out to users about the change.
While many libraries will use ILLIAD, a system similar to Loansome Doc, we are anticipating users’ interactions with the new ordering processes will be different. PHDL is developing documentation and training on the new delivery systems to be delivered as needed.
If you have an active Loansome Doc account, you will be able to use it until June 30, 2019. Articles or resources in transit in the Loansome Doc system will complete the process in the old system. As of July 1, 2019, new requests will have to be made in the new delivery systems. New user accounts are not currently being created.
